For the second year running, Pat from Up Our Street supported St Judes Somali Women’s Group to organise the St Judes Community Fair. As it happens, Saturday was one of the hottest days of the year, and we were all looking for shade while setting up gazebos in between the blocks of flats.
This year’s event was the biggest yet as we invited individuals and organisations to help us bring fun to residents. As it is already a tradition, delicious Somali food was on offer and while parents relaxed chatting in the shade, children enjoyed face painting, jumping on the bouncy castle, skipping, chalking, games and even a mini football tournament between the blocks organised by Khalil and volunteers from Bristol Youth Horn Concern.
Easton resident, activist and a super active mum Abiir got children to race, skip and take part in street games that are just perfect for the summertime in the city. A giant inflatable orca also arrived in the neighbourhood and children got talking with Russell, Zaharatu and Sumiya from Incredible Oceans about the impact of plastic on ocean animals. We were also visited by Abda and Sharon, community champions from Bristol Energy Network.
The event was also an opportunity for us to meet young people from St Judes as they volunteered throughout the day making sure that the closed roads were safe and free from traffic and helping with the football tournament. We hope to see them again at our Thank You awards as they deserve a big Thank You for making sure this event was such an amazing success.
